Gear Up for Winter Fun

Gear Up For Winter Fun

Winter is officially coming, and many of us might be dreading this one more than usual. If you live in a part of the country that doesn’t exactly get a lot of patio-weather days during this time of year, you might be desperately seeking safe ways to get out of the house. The great outdoors has been an absolute gift throughout 2020 to help us stay sane while saying safe. So, let’s think about winter recreation to help fill your free time – maybe you can even try something new!

Of course, you’ll have different options depending on where you live. Here in Colorado, ski and snowboard season is ramping up. In the upper midwest, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and snowshoeing are popular pastimes. Whatever activity might be up your alley, we’d like to share some of our favorite products that help us enjoy our sport of choice better.

Hit the Slopes

Skiing Hacks

My winter sport of choice is skiing, and it’s the one I have the most personal experience with. I ski with a small hydropack backpack, which does not give me a lot of storage space. For this reason, I always use the RunOff Waterproof Wallet because of its slim design, and because it keeps my cards and cash nice and dry in case of the occasional “yard sale.” (Hey, I never said I was a good skier!)

Hitch Phone Anchor + LanyardI also like to keep my phone handy to snap photos, but fumbling with it while on the lift always makes me nervous (Jerry alert). I started using the Hitch Phone Anchor + Lanyard for days on the mountain because I know I won’t lose it through my butterfingers, and it also makes it easy to pull out of my jacket whenever I want to check my season pass app or take photos. The Hitch Phone Anchor + Tether is also a popular choice for this use, and you can attach the S-Biner MicroLock to an anchor point on your jacket, or the belt loop on your pants.

My third essential for skiing is S-Biners. Did I mention my pack doesn’t have much storage? I keep a couple S-Biners clipped to it to hold things like my gloves or helmet when I head into the lodge for a toddy. You can also use one to attach to your lift tickets or season pass to your clothing or bag.

Gear Tie LoopableFinally, I always keep my skis and poles bundled with Gear Tie Loopables at each end for transporting and storing.

Because we’re lucky enough here in Boulder to live driving distance to the ski slopes, many of our team members are avid skiers and snowboarders. I asked a few of them what products come in handy for days on the mountain, and here’s what they had to say:

Cinch-A-Lot Stretch Strap: Great for attaching gloves that don’t happen to have loops, bundling poles, or holding small items like lip balm or hand sanitizer.

GearLine Organization System: If you’re staying in a hotel or rental unit, this is indispensable for organizing gear and drying out wet clothing.

RunOff Medium Travel Pouch: The perfect size RunOff bag for your paper trails map, so it doesn’t wind up soggy after you end up in the deep stuff. (I always carry a paper map as a backup just in case my phone runs out of battery or I lose signal.)

DoohicKey+ Key Tool: Good to have around for emergency repairs (or… emergency bottle-opening).

INKA Key Chain Pen: Keep this handy as a quick-use pen for signing bar receipts or making notes on your trail map. But the real bonus here is the pressurized cartridge with waterproof ink, allowing you to use it at any altitude, any angle, and in wet conditions.

Snowshoe the Trails

Snowshoeing

Gear Tie Reusable Rubber Twist Tie

If you live somewhere that has great hiking trails that are now covered in a blanket of snow and ice, you might give snowshoeing a try! You can rent a pair at many equipment shops, but you can also buy yourself a pair at reasonable prices.

Snowshoeing is a great way to get out, connect with nature, and enjoy the winter wonderland. For this activity, you’ll definitely need a backpack full of safety and survival essentials – always be prepared for the worst! Here’s a helpful guide of gear you’ll need to bring along, which includes a first aid kit, headlamp, and knife. Better hook an S-Biner on your pack too, because you never know when that will come in handy. For storing and transporting your snowshoes, wrangle and hang them with a Gear Tie.

No snow in sight? Go on a chilly hike! Bring those essentials, layer up, and hit the trails.

Try Cross Country Skiing

Cross Country Skiing

If you’ve never had the opportunity to try cross country skis, it can be a fantastic way to spend a bluebird day. Dip your toe in with some rental gear and head to a nordic center, or research some Cross Country spots in your area. Much the same as snowshoeing, you’ll need a pack filled with your essentials so you’re well prepared for any unexpected scenario.

Chill Out in an Ice Fishing Shanty

Ice Fishing

If you live in the upper midwest, you may already be familiar with the winter pastime that is ice fishing. Whether you catch a big one, or just spend the day hanging out in the shelter with family, it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience. While you’re waiting on the fish to bite, you’ll need a beverage. Use a SlapLit LED Drink Wrap to keep your cold drinks cold, your hot drinks hot, and click on the light for some colorful flair. A GearLine will come in handy inside the shelter to hang and organize your equipment and damp clothing. You’ll need some light inside your shanty, so bring along a lantern or two. A DoohicKey FishKey is a perfect multitool for any angler, and can help with tasks from fixing rods to opening bottles. For hauling your shanty to and from your lake of choice, our Dual CamJam Tie Down Systems will be perfect for the job.

Get Your Thrills on a Snowmobile

Snowmobiling

Adrenaline junkies will love the thrill of snowmobiling, whether you’re in the mountains or the great plains. Rent a vehicle for a day to give it a try, and if you love it, you can always think about buying one of your own someday. Remember that everything your bring along may get wet! Protect your things in the safety of a RunOff bag or packing cube, and secure it to your ride with a Gear Tie.

Give Fat Tire Biking a Go

Fat Tire Snow Biking

If you’re an avid cyclist, you might be getting that sad feeling when the weather turns snowy. With the new fat tire bikes built for snowy conditions, you can turn that frown upside down. Fat tire biking is a fun way to explore off-the-beaten-path trails, and you get a great workout to boot. You can rig a RunOff Bag with a couple of Gear Ties to create a waterproof handlebar bag full of your snacks and essentials. Because daylight is fleeting these days, be sure your fattie bike is equipped with front and rear lights, just in case you get caught out at dusk (or if you’re on dawn patrol).

Find Your Perfect Sledding Hill

Snow Tubing

On those magical mornings when you wake up to a blanket of fresh snow, grab a sled or tube and head for the hills! I would advise you to know your sledding location of choice at the very beginning of the season, so you know exactly where to go and won’t waste precious downhill time driving around for a hill. Because we know you’ll want to capture the fun on video, bring a RunOff Waterproof Phone Case. It will keep your device dry, and you can wear the included lanyard around your neck so you don’t lose it in the snow on your way down.

What winter activity are you most looking forward to? Report back, and give us a shout if you discover a new Nite Ize hack that helps you along the way.

Prepare Your Home For Winter With These Hacks

Posted by Brian Lambert on Nov 24, 2020 1:59:00 PM

Prepare your home for winter with these hacks

It happened again. It seems to happen every year. I am sitting on the patio of my mountaintop home in 70-degree weather plotting out my next bike ride when the weather forecasters start sounding the alarm for winter. In my area, that means snow and wind. We have regular sustained winds of 60 mph and gusts up to 85 mph as storms roll through, so it is essential to be prepared, or risk serious consequences.

My first year living on the hill I used bungee cords to try to keep everything in my yard from blowing away, but the weather was just too severe for the elastic. The cords disintegrated over time and became useless. When I saw a lawn chair connected to a bungee hovering over the hill like a kite on a string, I knew I needed a better solution.

Keep your patio furniture safe from wind storms with Gear Ties

Since I don’t have the storage space to bring in all the patio furniture, I use Gear Tie Reusable Rubber Twist Ties to fasten most of the pieces to the deck rails. I use the 18” and 24” most frequently because they are easy to tie and untie when I want to move a chair.

Gear Tie Reusable Rubber Twist Ties

Once our first hard freeze is in the forecast, I know it’s time to blow out the irrigation system. I also wrap insulation around the exposed pipes, and secure it in place with 12” Gear Ties.

Insulating your sprinkler pipes

The hoses get disconnected, wrapped with 24” Gear Ties, and hung up for the season.

Gear Tie Reusable Rubber Twist Tie

I also have rain barrels that I remove from the gutters and store outside. I use KnotBone Adjustable Bungees as well as 12’ Dual CamJam Tie Down System to affix the barrels to the fence for the winter. I love both of these products because I can adjust the length and tension of the bungees, and respectively move the CamJam buckle to anywhere on the webbing, so it is easy to manage when I need to tighten or adjust.

KnotBone Adjustable Bungee and Dual CamJam Tie Down System

The heavy wind and wet snow can sometimes knock down trees or power lines, so we lose power a couple times each winter and must rely on our generator. We keep the starter battery inside the house and connected to a trickle charger, so it’s always ready when we need it. The rubber band that originally held the battery in place rotted, so I use an 18” Gear Tie to keep it in place when it’s running. I also keep 10 gallons of fuel just in case we have a sustained outage.

My last little hack is for my truck.  There is not much room for me to chain up in the canyon and I’m concerned that someone won’t see me as I’m lying in the road at night, so I have a winter chain up kit I repurposed from summer products, including two NiteGem LED Luminaries, a red LED Mini Glow Stick, a Radiant 250 Headlamp, three extra AAA batteries, a pair of winter work gloves, and my Carhartt coveralls, all stored in a RunOff Waterproof Large Packing Cube. I can just grab it, suit up, and feel safe while I'm crawling around in the snow putting on the chains.

Winter chain-up kit

And just like that, we’re buttoned up and ready to hunker down for winter. Granted, it’s taken me a few failures before I found what works, but such is life. That being said, I’m always on the lookout for new tips. Leave a comment and let me know what other improvements I should consider for my winterizing strategy.

Last Call For Fall Fun: 10 Autumn Activities

Last Call For Fall: 10 Autumn Activities

The leaves are changing, the days are shortening, and there’s a chill in the air. It’s fall time, and before you know it, winter will make its icy appearance. But before we head into months of snow, slush, and shivers, let’s get out there and soak in the fall fun.

Keep reading for 10 fresh ways to make the most of our Autumn days and "nites."

1. Leaf through town

Leaf Peeping Drive

What’s fall without a leaf-peeping drive? If you live in a state with changing seasons, you might be able catch the vibrant Autumn colors come to life in person. Research the best leaf-peeping spots in your state (and make sure to check you haven’t missed the color change) and set off on your journey with your Steelie® Phone Mount to give directions along the route.

If you prefer to get out of the car and see the changing colors up close, nothing beats an Autumn hike or bike ride. Just make sure to bundle up and gear up your bike with one of our tool-free bike lights! Especially adventurous folks can take their leaf-peeping trip to the next level on a four wheel or ATV too — check out local rentals if you’re craving a little adrenaline rush.

2. Carve Out Some Fun

SpotLit XL Pumpkin

Carving pumpkins is a universal way to embrace the spooky season, unleash some creativity, and step up your decorating game while you’re at it. Grab a gourd of your choosing from your local pumpkin patch or grocery store and make sure to get durable carving tools that can get the job done (or kid-safe tools for little ones). Once your masterpiece is complete, throw in a SpotLit® XL or NiteGem for color-changing, fire-free illumination that will shine for nights to come.

Not up for a pulpy mess? Painting pumpkins might be a safer bet.

3. Drink It All In

Pumpking Beer

Get in the Autumn spirit with some spirits. Check out local cideries to sample sweet and spicy hard cider varieties, or pick up your favorite 6 pack of pumpkin ale for an at-home happy hour, complete with an Ahhh… Bottle Opener. If you prefer the winer things in life, visit your local vineyard or winery to sip on some fall blends.

4. Plan A Picnic

Fall Picnic

If you live in a state with harsh winters, you know you’re in for months of being buried under a heavy winter coat, scarf, boots, and gloves get-up. Soak in the sun while you can on a peaceful picnic at the park or even in your backyard.

5. Train for The Long Run

SlapLit Rechargeable LED Slap Wrap

Local Fall 5ks and Fun Runs are a popular way to get your blood pumping and raise money for a great cause. Sign up and start training — you can even get the whole family involved to get some fresh air away from screens.  If you're training in the morning or after work hours, be sure you’re staying safe and visible. The Rechargeable SlapLit LED Slap Wrap and TagLit Magnetic Marker are great ways to stay visible in the dark mornings and evenings, and a headlamp will help light your path.

6. Bake Up a Storm

Apple Pie

After watching a few seasons of the Great British Baking Show, you’ve probably learned a thing or two. Put your skills to the test and try out a homemade pie, pumpkin bread, candy apple, or other Autumn recipe everyone in the house can enjoy. Free fall aromas included!

Keep the recipe on your phone visible and flour-free with a Steelie Bendable Arm + Ratcheting Clamp or Steelie Pedestal Mount to make your baking adventure a breeze.

7. Game On

Flashflight Light Up Flying Disc

Make the most of the warm days we have left with an outdoor family game everyone can play. Pick up a Flashflight Light Up Flying Disc to keep the games going after-dark, or even a GlowStreak LED Ball so your pup doesn’t miss out on the nighttime fun.

8. Paddle Your Own Canoe (Or Kayak)

RunOff Waterproof Phone Case

While the chilly temperatures might make swimming out of the question, an Autumn kayak or canoe trip might be just the thing to appease water lovers already missing summer days at the lake. Research around for leaf-peeping spots and their nearby streams to find an especially gorgeous Autumn route.

You can rest assured that your phone, gear and snacks will stay safe and dry in one of our RunOff Waterproof Bags while you paddle the waters.

9. Gather 'Round The Fire Pit

Campfire SlapLit LED Drink Wrap

Nothing screams fall like scary ghost stories told around the fire. Crack open an Autumn ale (wrapped in a SlapLit to keep it lit and chilly), and come prepared with your favorite spooky stories to set the mood. After everyone is scared silly, lift their spirits with a toasty S’more cooked over the fire.

10. See Stars

FallFun-Stargazing

Grab a blanket, snacks, and a Radiant® 300 Headlamp set to red mode for a cozy night under the stars. Whether in your backyard or off the grid, you’ll be in for a night of out-of-this-world views, nonetheless. Three meteor showers are due when the moon is in crescent this Autumn, giving you the best view possible. Look out the Orionids shower on the night of October 20th through the 21st, the Northern Taurids on the night of November 11-12, and the Leonids on November 16-17.

And don’t miss the especially rare (and especially spooky) full moon on Halloween night!

Upgrade Your Gravel Ride With This Hack

Upgrade Your Gravel Ride With This Hack

By Guest Blogger Todd Brady

Todd Brady

There's no doubt cycling has become a way for many of us to get out of the house and connect with nature during this time of social distancing. For me, cycling became a way of life in the early 90s, and since then I have seen the evolution of mountain biking, the decline of American road cycling, and now the success of GRAVEL riding.

If you are not familiar with gravel riding, it is the latest trend in the world of cycling. Take a mountain bike and a traditional road bike, put them in a blender and what you come out with is the ultimate adventure machine. Gravel bikes feature drop bars for when on the tarmac, disc brakes for quick and easy braking, and wider tires for stability in the dirt.

Gravel Bike

In order to prepare for a long ride on the trails, it's a good idea to pack a handlebar bag full of food, sunscreen, and other essentials you'll need.

This year I entered my first Gravel race – The SteamBoat Gravel – with over 100 miles of racing.  Like many events this year, it was canceled due to the pandemic and was made into a virtual event instead. In preparation for the event, I chose the Nite Ize RunOff Small Packing Cube as my handlebar bag, and attached it onto my bike with a couple of 12" Gear Ties. There were a few reasons that I chose this specific RunOff bag:

1. The size and shape of this bag fit perfectly on the front of my handlebar.

Gravel Bike Handlebar Bag

2. It can hold all of the essentials I need for a ride of this length.

Gravel Ride Snacks

3. Nite Ize Gear Ties can be looped through the bag's anchor points for easy attachment and removal.

RunOff Small Packing Cube

RunOff Handlebar Bag

4. Lastly, knowing that this bag is completely waterproof (thanks to the TRU Zip zipper) gave me peace of mind during the 9-hour ride, in case we were hit by a stray rain shower.

RunOff Waterproof Small Packing Cube

The RunOff Small Packing Cube worked fantastically as my handlebar bag, and I highly recommend it. It is worth mentioning that you will have to pull over to access your belongings inside of the bag due to the zipper being positioned underneath in this configuration. However, this offered me a good excuse to pull over to snap some photos or have a snack while enjoying the scenery.

For me, the fact that this compact bag holds as much as it does in addition to being totally waterproof makes it my new Gravel bag of choice.

Everyday Carry Essentials from Nite Ize

Posted by Cassie Ryan on Aug 13, 2020 1:22:08 PM

Everyday Carry Essentials from Nite Ize

If you spend time on social media and have an affinity for clever products to put in your pockets, you might be familiar with the acronym EDC. It stands for Everyday Carry, and it’s just what it sounds like – the pieces of gear you carry with you when you leave the house. When it comes to being prepared everywhere you go, you must choose those pieces of gear wisely, so you have the essentials you need without going overboard and weighing down your pockets.

So what makes an ideal EDC setup? It comes down to personal preferences (as well as what jobs you might encounter while you’re out), but let’s get down to the fundamentals.

1. Wallet

Financial Tool RFID Blocking Wallet

No matter where you’re headed, you’ll most likely need one of these. Although many might opt for classic leather, you might consider something unexpected. For a wallet that offers functionality, our Financial Tool Multi Tool Wallet (and its RFID-blocking version) offers 7 different tools in one lightweight, low-profile design. And, it’s TSA friendly!

For a streamlined wallet that is truly waterproof, check out our RunOff Waterproof Wallet. I personally started using this wallet during ski season, since it was slim enough to slide right into my jacket pocket. When COVID-19 hit the US, I kept on using it because I could wash it with soap and water whenever I got home from errands, and I haven’t looked back since.

If minimalism is your game, the Ca$hBack Phone Wallet attaches right on the back of your phone or case (with 3M VHB adhesive), so you can combine two of your most important items in one. The feature that makes the Ca$hBack stand out from other phone wallets out there is the safety tab, so you don’t risk losing your ID, cards or cash while out.

2. Key Chain

BigFoot Locker KeyRack

The number two item you should always check for when you leave the house is your keys. Keeping your keys organized and accessible can save you a headache of forgetting which is which, or losing them entirely (never a good feeling). Nite Ize offers a wide variety of key chains, so choosing one just comes down to personal preference and aesthetics.

My personal pick is the BigFoot Locker KeyRack. This key chain offers great functionality and organization of your keys, in a fun and unique design. The locking KeyRack features five “toes” equipped with MicroLock S-Biners that let you easily attach, remove and secure keys so they won’t get lost. And the best part? No split rings to frustrate you and break your fingernails!

Cinch-A-Lot Stretch StrapFor something a little different, check out the Cinch-A-Lot Stretch Strap. This stretchy silicone strap is a key chain that can cinch and grip around things like a water bottle, phone, sunscreen, or your wrist. The strap is paired with an S-Biner MicroLock and split ring, and features a metal cinch-slider so you can easily adjust the size for a secure and snug fit.

Incidentally, we just released the Cinch-A-Lot Mini this summer, which is a scaled-down version that’s perfect for keeping smaller items like wireless earbuds, charging cables, chap stick, or hand sanitizer clipped to your keys or bag.

Need more options? Here are my key chain honorable mentions:

You can also visit our key accessories page to view them all.

3. Multi Tool

DoohicKey Key Tool

You never know what types of problems you might encounter whether you’re on the job, running errands, traveling, or around the house. Having a trusty multi tool on your key chain can help you tackle a variety of tasks from fixing a loose screw to opening a bottle.

Our classic DoohicKey Key Tool is our most popular multi tool, and offers five tools in one small TSA-friendly design that clips conveniently to your keys. It features a box cutter, bottle opener, wrench, ruler, and flathead screwdriver. This little guy is clipped to my keys at all times.

 DoohicKey in action

Our freshly launched DoohicKey+ Key Tool packs even more tools than the original! This multi tool features all the tools of the classic DoohicKey, plus an integrated serrated edge, scoring point, nail puller/staple remover, and Phillips head screwdriver – while still being TSA friendly.

4. Knife

DoohicKey Key Chain Knife

A trusty pocket knife can come in handy in many scenarios throughout the day, and for this reason I personally keep the DoohicKey Key Chain Knife with me at all times. This little knife is compact, lightweight, durable, and has a locking blade for safety.

When you know you’ll be opening packages or mail (as many of us are these days), or breaking down boxes, the DoohicKey Key Chain Hook Knife is the right tool for the job. The fold-out locking blade has both a smooth cutting edge and a curved bladed end so you can open your boxes without worrying about damaging what’s inside. Both DoohicKey Knives come in blue, orange, olive and red.

5. Flashlight

Radiant 100 Keychain Flashlight

My go-to flashlight that I carry is the Radiant 100 Keychain Flashlight. It’s compact enough to fit right on your key chain, yet packs a powerful 100 lumens. If you’re used to flipping on your phone’s flashlight setting in dark spaces, note that it can only provide up to about 50 lumens, so you’re getting double the brightness with the Radiant 100.

For even more lighting power in a small body, the 185-lumen INOVA XP Pen Light is a solid choice for EDC enthusiasts. The push button end-cap switch activates a high or low beam, and the durable aluminum body is shockproof, crushproof, and waterproof.

6. Phone

Steelie Orbiter Dash Kit

Let’s face it, we’re almost all guilty of being glued to our phones. When it’s time to leave the house and hit the road, you’ll likely need a place to put it while in your vehicle. If you’re using GPS to get to your destination, you’ll also need to have it in view enough to see the directions (without it obstructing your view of the road). Our Steelie phone mount systems are the perfect way to do all of these things, and with several mounting options, you’ll be able to find the right fit for you.

An unexpected but highly useful accessory for your phone is the Hitch Phone Anchor + Tether. I am a solid convert to this product after trying it out while working a trade show last year, and I wasn’t planning on loving it as much as I do. I haven’t taken it off since! I mostly use it to carry my phone around my wrist when my hands are full (which is often), but I can also clip it to my belt loop so I don’t drop it with my notorious butterfingers.

7. Pen

INKA Key Chain Pen

Another item you should always have on hand is a pen – and, what would be an easier way to carry that pen than right on your key chain? The INKA Key Chain Pen allows you to use it as a quick-use pen or convert it to a full-sized writing instrument, and features a replaceable pressurized ink cartridge that gives it its amazing ability to write in all conditions – underwater, at any altitude, in extreme temperatures, and at any angle! Plus, it’s always more sanitary to use your own pen than to borrow one.

We hope we’ve inspired you to evaluate your own EDC setup, or at least to look beyond the split ring. What items are always in your pockets or bags?
