Camping For Newbies: The Beginner’s Guide

Camping Tips for Beginners

After a few months stuck inside, the great outdoors has never looked more inviting. And with summer appearing before our very eyes, taking a good ole’ fashioned camping trip sounds like just the ticket. But if you’re a camping newbie like I once was, there are a few things you could learn (and use) to make sure you’re not lost in the dark. Keep reading to learn from my camping blunders and make the most of your night under the stars.

Step 1: Select your site wisely

Plan you camping trip

Setting off on a spontaneous camping trip is virtually impossible in 2020 – especially if you’re planning to set up camp in a particularly stunning area (ahem, all of Colorado). Basically, if you think you’ve found the perfect camping spot, chances are, other people are thinking the same thing. Save yourself the disappointment of a day-long campground tour around the state scouring for an open spot and plan ahead. After learning this lesson the hard way and wasting a few gallons of gas in the process, I won’t hit the road until we either (1) Have a spot reserved in advance, or (2) Have read enough reviews/forums to know that our first-come, first-serve spot in question isn’t too popular. If you opt for route 2, keep in mind that you’re always taking a gamble and prepare a backup plan. And don’t forget to check weather forecasts and know the route to the closest hospital before you hit the road!

Semi-pro tip: If you’re looking for a true camping experience, don’t bother with a “family” campground chock-full of pools, small sites, and Wi-Fi. Check out some dispersed camping sites for unbelievable views that are easier to come by, but be prepared for zero access to plumbing and a rough ride to get there. But first, check your local and state regulations for dispersed camping policies, and if/where it is allowed.

Step 2: Pack accordingly (and then some)

How to pack for camping trip

Once you put that first stake in the ground, there’s no turning back, so make sure you’ve got all your essentials packed tight. If your site is near water or sand, be prepared for everything (and I mean everything) to end up muddy and sandy. Sidestep some of the mess with a few RunOff® Waterproof Bags in tow. I personally love the RunOff® Waterproof Phone Pouch, as well as the Large Packing Cube, to keep my clothes, gear, and phone dry. And if you’re planning to have a wilderness shower (or showers are available on the grounds), the RunOff® Waterproof Toiletry Bag is a must.

On top of staying dry, keeping your things organized is crucial. Bundle up your camping cutlery, tent poles, lighters, bottle openers, and other must-haves with a few Gear Ties. And don’t forget toilet paper, bug spray, firewood, adequate lighting, warm socks, a first-aid kit, and a deck of cards. You’ll thank me later.

Semi-pro tip: Running out of room in your car? Take your larger duffels and gear to the roof, securing with the Dual CamJam® Tie Down System.

Step 3: Make the most of your daylight

Camping tips for newbies

If your spot is near water and the sun is out, aim to set up camp earlier in the day to enjoy a dip or two. You can set up a GearLine Organization System to hang your wet clothes, swimsuits or towels out to dry (as well as clip and hang your water bottles and other essentials).

Once you’ve arrived at your dream spot, pitching a tent is usually the biggest struggle. There’s no shame in bringing along a tent manual and brushing up on a tutorial or two before setting off on your trip—but remember, once you’re there, data service is bound to be limited, so don’t expect the internet to help you. Once the sun sets, you’ll surely have some difficulty navigating around your tent. Avoid tripping over your virtually invisible tent line (like I have in the past) with the high-tension, knot-free, and light-reflective Figure 9 Tent Line Kit.

Semi-pro tip: If you’re not up for sleeping on hard ground, buying an air mattress is worth its value and then some. And it may sound obvious, but if you bring an air mattress, don’t forget the air pump and extra batteries too. Again, learn from my mistakes.

Step 4: Get your lights ready to shine

SlapLit LED Drink Wrap

On your first night out in the backcountry, you’ll be shocked by how truly pitch-black it gets in the later hours. Protect yourself from a night of frustration and mishaps with plenty of portable illumination. I love the lightweight, hat-friendly Radiant® 170 Rechargeable Clip Light for prepping and cooking our dinner by the fire and when walking around the site. And the SlapLit™ LED Drink Wrap will solve all of your drink mix-ups and spills, while some NiteGems will allow you to easily dig through your cooler and spot your favorite snacks and drinks.

While the pure peace of sitting around a campfire can’t be overstated, that doesn’t you mean you can’t enjoy the rest of your site, too. When you get an itch for entertainment, gather 'round for a game of cards – a BugLit® Rechargeable Micro Lantern is a camp table lighting solution the kids will love. Bring along a Flashflight®  to toss around under the stars for some nighttime fun (bonus points if you snap some color-changing long-exposure shots).

Semi-pro tip: Camping is better with dogs, plain and simple. Keep your furry best friends protected and visible with a NiteDog™ Rechargeable LED Collar or Rechargeable NiteHowl®.

Semi-pro tip 2: While the whole point of camping is to unplug, keeping your phone charged is always advantageous for photos, music, or safety reasons. Pick up the Radiant® 314 Rechargeable Lantern for campsite or in-tent illumination with built-in USB charging.

Step 5: Rest easy (and critter-free)

Camping tips for beginners

After a night of making memories (and s’mores), all that’s left to do is hit the hay. Bear in mind, you’re not the only creatures out there. Avoid any encounters with bears, raccoons, and other scavengers by cleaning up your site and stowing away any trash in sealable bear-proof containers. We like to put our trash, cooler, and extra food in the car to be safe, but some opt to hang theirs up in a tree — just make sure to never leave it with you in the tent. Once your site is cleaned up, make sure to put out your fire completely by dousing it with water and spreading out the embers to prevent any reigniting.

Semi-pro tip: You’ll likely wake up colder than you expected, so make sure to wear extra layers and thick socks. My secret weapon to a warm night in the tent is cuddling up to my dog.

Stay safe, happy campers!

At this point, congrats! You’ve weathered through your first camping night. You might wake up early with a few backaches, but as they say, "No pain, no gain." Bask in the beauty of pure, natural views with the smell of sweet campfire as you enjoy a fresh breakfast and coffee à la French Press. Enjoy your trip, happy campers!

Note: As the world continues to adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic, many campgrounds and National Parks may be closed or operating with strict guidelines. Refer to your local resources for the latest updates and camping practices, and stay safe out there!

National Bike Month: Cycling Life with Boulder's Petunia Mafia

Posted by Cassie Ryan on May 12, 2020 11:34:33 AM

Petunia Mafia Boulder

May is National Bike Month, and we'd like to take this time to introduce you to the Petunia Mafia women's cycling club, based in our home town of Boulder, CO. We chatted with Laura, the president of Petunia Mafia about all things cycling  – from ride essentials to the greater meaning of being a part of this growing community.

Q: Tell us a bit about Petunia Mafia and its mission.

Petunia Mafia is an all-inclusive women's cycling team based in Boulder, Colorado. We welcome all skill levels of road, mountain, gravel, and cyclocross riders. The team was established on fashion - our founder is a professional athletic apparel designer - and we've grown to be a community of over 250 women with the common passion of cycling.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a part of Petunia Mafia?

Every year a member tells me how this team changed her life. We've brought together people who  probably never would've met but then ended up being best friends. Some women have accomplished things they never thought they'd do, whether that's race, take a gnarly singletrack line, or log huge miles in one ride. We make a concerted effort to be friendly, encouraging, and offer tools so that women can elevate their life experiences. My favorite thing is bringing this vast array women of together because I see the value of this connection and receive an enormous amount of gratification.

National Bike Month

Q: Where is your favorite place to ride?

Mountain bike: Moab, UT.

Road bike: Tuscany.

Gravel bike: Boulder County's northeast roads.

Q: Do you prefer road or mountain biking?

That's the beauty of living in Boulder. You choose your 2-wheeled weapon on any given day according to weather or mood.

Q: What is your go-to energy snack during long rides?

I love the Skratch Labs recipe for savory bacon rice cakes – I just need to be better at making them in advance. Post-rides I love a "banana sundae": peanut butter spread on a banana, drizzled with agave, sprinkled lightly with vanilla protein powder with a few chocolate chips shoved into the top.

RunOff Waterproof BagsQ: What are other essentials you always bring on long rides?

I keep a Nite Ize RunOff Waterproof Pocket filled with the essentials so I just have to stuff it in my jersey pocket and go. It holds a copy of my insurance card and driver's license, a sample of sunscreen, tiny lip balm, face wipe (swiped from the local BBQ restaurant), and $10 for an apres coffee or beer. I always have my Radiant 750 and Radiant 125 bike lights mounted too.

Q: What are the most important things people should know about bike safety?

Front and rear lights should be lit every time you ride, even on a bright sunny day. Being seen by a driver is greatly increased when lights are on, and exponentially more if they're flashing. Get in a habit of charging them as soon as you return so they're ready to go.

Q: What are your favorite Nite Ize bike products and why?

I love the Disc-O Select SpokeLit lights that I put on my cruiser wheels. They're like a party in motion.  It's an added bonus that they increase visibility.

SpokeLit LED Wheel Light

Q: What about your favorite non-bike product?

I'm an organization freak so I love the Gear Ties; I think I have them in every length and color. I use every size of the RunOff bags for travel packing and camping.

Gear Tie Reusable Rubber Twist Tie

Q: How can people find out about groups like Petunia Mafia in their area?

Local bike shops are a great resource. Most shops are affiliated with a bike club or team.

4 Fun Activities For Kids To Keep Them Entertained While Staying Home

Fun Activities For Kids to Keep Them Entertained While Staying Home

At this point, it’s probably not much use to tell you what you already know – we are living in unprecedented times. And what I hope you all know without it needing to be said – that we hope each of you in the Nite Ize community and beyond are safe and healthy, and reading this from the comfort of your homes. And, more pertinently, if you happen to share those homes with tiny humans who call you mom or dad, we hope you are not going absolutely insane yet. In case you are flirting with that brink however, we thought we’d share a few ideas on using your Nite Ize products to keep those kiddos entertained and cut you a break.

1. Build a Fort

Gear Tie Reusable Rubber Twist Ties

If you haven’t started fort building, this one is a life saver. You put in a little effort on the front end of putting it together, but then your kids have their own hideout - a new space in the house that is all theirs. Fill it with soft blankets, kid chairs, toys, whatever they are into right now. Then sit back and enjoy your space – the rest of the house – quietly. Genius. With Gear Ties and S-Biners, you can rig a quick lean-to style fort just about anywhere with just a couple blankets. My personal favorite style fort is a fan-powered dome one. This is a childhood-special – shout out to my big brother for the engineering expertise behind it.  Basically, you’ll need blankets and a box fan, then you need to create a semi-airtight boundary for your fort. Blankets secured over tables and chairs work great (if you get a leak, just use a Gear Tie to secure the blanket to table leg).

Next, throw a bed sheet over the top, seal the edges, and make sure it’s snug around your box fan (I also use a Gear Tie here to keep the sheet from blowing down). *Bonus if you can spot the kid in the photo below*

How to build a fort for kids using Gear Ties

Then turn on your fan, and boom, you’ve got an air-conditioned, fort-extraordinaire to keep those little muchkins busy for hours.

2. Digitize That Fort

Steelie Bendable Arm + Ratcheting Clamp Kit

Okay, the fort itself should buy you at least an hour a day of entertainment, but once the novelty and old-fashioned fun has worn off, buy yourself some more time with our good friend, technology. I set up the Steelie Bendable Arm in our fort, stuck the iPad on it, and FaceTimed Grandma.

The kids loved it, Grandma loved it, and I loved sitting quietly in the next room, drinking an entire cup of coffee, in one sitting, while it was still hot.

And, if you make your fort big enough, you can make it feel like your own cozy indoor movie theater. Just use a dark sheet instead of a white one, use flashlights or a mini lantern to get everyone settled in, bring in a big bowl of popcorn, and you’ve got a cozy family movie date, day or night.

3. Elf on the Shelf? How About BugLit on the Bookshelf?

BugLit Micro Flashlight

Ok, maybe it doesn’t have quite the same ring or pizazz as that lovable little Christmas helper, but BugLit is pretty darn cute, and his bendable, grippy arms and legs make it easy to hide him in fun places all over the house.

Pick a new spot every day and the kids will have a blast looking for him, and you get down time while they do. You could make it a countdown till Easter, or countdown to the end of social distancing, or pick a timeline that makes you happy. And if you get really bored, the Bug is a pretty good listener. Sometimes he and I enjoy a cold beer and smooth tunes at the piano after the kids go to bed. Hey, whatever gets you through…

4. Get Outside, Even After Dark

SpokeLit Rechargeable LED Wheel Lights

Turns out, lots of people are getting outside to walk their neighborhoods and local parks during this time of isolation. That’s great! ...But, it is also making social distancing guidelines difficult to follow as trails are getting overly crowded. A great way to avoid the crowds but still shake out those stir-crazy legs is to head out for a family ride in the evening - and luckily, we are headed towards more and more warm nights. If you’re a Nite Ize junkie, chances are your family’s bikes are already loaded up with lights and you’re set to go. If not though, click for our recommendations on front, rear, and side/wheel lights.  Enjoy the fresh air together and sap the last of the kids energy before bedtime. Win win.

If there’s ever a time to tighten the bonds of our online community, this is it! Please share your tips and tricks for keeping the kiddos entertained at home in our comments section below. Bonus if it includes Nite Ize gear, but we love to hear all your creative suggestions.

Plan Your Valentine’s Day Getaway

Posted by Cassie Ryan on Feb 3, 2020 9:28:17 AM

Plan Your Valentine's Day Getaway

The shelves are lined with pink cards, chocolate boxes, and teddy bears holding red hearts when you walk into any drugstore, which can only mean one thing: Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. Fortunately, Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday this year, and on a three-day holiday weekend for some. The stars might be aligning for a quick weekend getaway with your Valentine’s date – whether they be a significant other, friend, family member, pet, or yourself (flying solo is fun too)! Here are some ideas to kickstart your inspiration, and some tips that might be a help along the way.

Where are you headed?

Valentine's Day Getaway

You might be already a step ahead of us and have already booked something. But if you’re more of a spontaneous person, you might consider somewhere driving distance if flights are already too pricey and hard to find. Look for cool places to visit within a few-hour radius around you – maybe there’s somewhere you’ve been thinking of visiting but haven’t had a chance yet. This might be the perfect time to book it! Browse some hotel or vacation booking sites and see what you find. If you live in a warmer climate, you could even consider camping or renting a camper van.

How are you getting there?

Already have plane tickets? Brilliant! Hitting the road? Fantastic. We have tips for both.

To help make packing easier, our RunOff Waterproof Bags are a great solution. For flying, the 3-1-1 Bag is a big help for consolidating your liquids for TSA. Plus, because the bag is waterproof, you can rest assured your shampoo won’t leak all over your date night attire if it bursts open. Because this is likely a short trip, you’ll probably want to opt for carry-on luggage only. The Medium and Large packing cubes are compressible, so you can fit more clothes into smaller spaces.

RunOff Waterproof Bags

For the road trip set, you’ll want a solution to keep your phone handy for GPS and music without having to mess with it in your hands while driving. Check out our Steelie mobile phone mounts to help you out. Don’t forget to make a playlist!

Steelie Orbiter Dash Kit

Pics or it didn’t happen

Valentines-FlipOut

Don’t fall victim to the feeling of coming home from an amazing vacation that you forgot to document with plenty of photos. Thankfully, we all carry cameras in our pockets these days, so be sure to use them. Snap some cute selfies with the help of a trusty FlipOut Handle for your phone, or keep it securely on your person with the Hitch Phone Anchor + Tether.

Light up your “nite”

If you’re headed somewhere with a jacuzzi or soaking tub, pack some Disc-O Select NiteGems for some flashy fun. They’re waterproof AND they float!

NiteGems

Bringing along your favorite beverage? Keep it cool and colorful with a SlapLit Drink Wrap. You wouldn’t want to lose sight of your drink in the dark, would you?

SlapLit-HotTub

Cross your fingers for a clear night – stargazing is a thoroughly under-appreciated activity. Better pack your headlamps so you can find a good spot to take in the show.

Remember, your dog is always your #1 valentine

Valentines Day gifts for dogs

Whether you’re celebrating with a significant other or not, your pet should be a part of the fun too. Check out some gift ideas for your dog here! If your furry friend is joining you on your vacation, a NiteHowl or SpotLit Collar Light is a great way to keep track of them during evening activities or potty breaks.

7 Gifts For New Parents That Are Ridiculously Useful

Posted by Katie S on Jan 15, 2020 10:56:55 AM

Ridiculously Useful Gifts For New Parents

There is little in this world more intimidating than becoming a new parent. And frankly, there’s only so much one can do to truly prepare emotionally for the sleep deprivation, endless diapers, and overwhelming feelings of love to come. Fortunately, there are a few useful items out there that do make the logistics of it all a bit easier. So, whether you’re looking to get equipped for your own baby’s arrival, or you’re shopping for a traditional baby shower gift (or for a manshower gift - yes, it’s a thing now), check out our suggestions for innovative Nite Ize-inspired presents for parents.

1. Pimp Their Ride

Nite Ize Your Stroller

No, I don’t mean the minivan. Every new parent’s saving grace is their stroller. Screaming baby? Time for a stroll. Need adult interaction? Time to stroll with a friend. Day or night, movement is the key to baby sleep, and sleep is key for parent survival. So, stroll. You can have the coolest whip in town with Nite Ize accessories. The HandleBand or Steelie Bar Mount keeps phones securely in place right on the handlebar. Oh you think I mean for texting and calls? No, no – that’s for the white noise app that will be soothing the baby to sleep along the way, and inevitably for then taking photos of the sleeping baby. Throw in a Radiant 125 Rechargeable Bike Light that attaches to a stroller handle or side bar to light the way on those late night walks. And lastly, throw in one of our super-sized S-Biners  – the easiest way to clip shopping bags, hats, water bottles and just about anything for quick access on the stroller.

2. Brighten Their Late "Nite" Activities

Radiant 100 Mini Lantern

Most parents share their bedroom with baby for at least the first few weeks for convenience of feeding, changing, rocking, shushing, and all those newfound middle-of-the-night hobbies. A nifty fact for new parents is that red light won’t disrupt you or baby’s night vision, and it’s less likely to wake up a sleeping partner. The cute, squishy Radiant 100 Lantern with both red and white light settings is a great option, or you can opt for a headlamp that also has red and white LED settings.

3. Make Diaper Clean-Up A Little Cleaner

Pack-A-Poo

Changing babies at places that aren’t really optimized for it can be awkward. When you’re somewhere that doesn’t have a diaper pail or easily-accessed outdoor trash can (e.g. an airplane, restaurant, or friend’s fancy house), it’s great to have poo-bags on hand to contain the smell before tossing the diaper. They're not just for dogs! The Pack-A-Poo clips easily to a diaper pad and is equipped with biodegradable bags. It also has a rotating core, so when baby inevitably grabs ahold of the bags and pulls them out, it’s easy to reel them right back in.

4. Kick the Baby Monitor up a Notch

Steelie Pedestal Mount

Steelie is great for attaching your phone to stroller handles, but isn’t exclusive to phones. You can use the Steelie Pedestal on your baby monitor or on the camera to help you get better angles.

5. Secure Everything

Secure everything with Gear Ties and S-Biners

With Gear Ties and S-Biners you can give all those oh-so-important toys and bottles easy attachment points to grab them quickly and not worry about losing them on the go.

6. Contain The Mess

RunOff Medium Packing Cube

Let's face it. Baby clothes (and parents' clothes for that matter) get dirty – often multiple times per day. When spit-ups or blowouts strike when you're out of the house, toss the soiled article in a RunOff Medium Packing Cube. The RunOff line of waterproof bags are best known for keeping water out, but they also do a great job of sealing messes in!

7. Just Hitch It

Hitch Phone Anchor + Tether

With the Hitch Phone Anchor + Tether, your phone stays attached to you. You can also clip the Hitch like a handle to hang a phone from your wrist when your hands are full. Later, it’s a great way to protect phones when toddlers reach that “grab-and-throw-things” phase.

Phone Hitch + Tether in action

New parents have always relied on advice from those who have gone before. Please help our community by sharing tips and tricks you’ve learned and your favorite Nite Ize parenting-hacks in the comments section below.

Holiday Decorating Made Brighter And Easier With Nite Ize

Posted by Katie S on Nov 26, 2019 9:48:19 AM

Holiday Decorating Made Brighter and Easier

It’s the hap, hap, happiest time of year! Let the holiday decorating, caroling, cocktail parties, and family gatherings begin. As everyone knows, with all the fun also comes stress. So, we’ve put together a few of our favorite Nite Ize tips and tricks to make sure you sail smoothly through this holiday season.

Perfect Light Placement Every Time

Gear Tie Foam Reusable Twist Tie

Sometimes getting those lights and garlands hung just perfectly can be an art. Make it simple with Gear Ties or cut-to-length Gear Tie Foam Twist Ties to attach those lights just about anywhere. Also, pro tip if you get a warm weekend in November, hang your light then! You don’t have to plug them in, but when the chilly weekends of December roll around, you’ll be glad to already have the job done.

And if you do get stuck hanging lights on a chilly day, just remember: nothing warms you up like a cold beer. With the Traveler Drink Holster, you never have to work without a beverage close at hand.

Don’t Be That Guy Who Leaves A Tree On The Highway

Twine is an imperfect solution for strapping trees to the roofs of cars. Don’t chance it with user error or failed twine that leads to a Christmas disaster on the highway. The easy to use Dual CamJam Tie Down System is easy to use and lets you achieve the right amount of tension to confidently keep your tree snugly in place for the drive home – no matter how far you have to go.

Trees Won’t Be The Only Thing Getting Lit

Light Up Your Punchbowl with NiteGems

Light up your holiday punch bowl with the floating, waterproof NiteGems. They can be set to a variety of colors so you can reuse them throughout the year for all your other holidays too or when you just want to add a bright pop to your beverage. If you want to get really fancy, make your own garnished ice cubes to float alongside your NiteGems, like these cranberry-and-rosemary ones:

And don’t forget about your beer and other-beverage drinkers – keep some SlapLit LED Drink Wraps around to keep hands warm and spirits bright all night long.

Fill The Stockings, Then Light Those Up Too

Add SpotLit LED Carabiners to the stockings to color-code them or for a fun pop of color. You could even color code everyone’s gifts with their stocking light color as a creative theme.
