Light Up Your Nighttime Dog Walks

By Pet Photographer Adam Goldberg, AGoldPhoto

Make nighttime walks with your pup simpler and safer

We recently teamed up with Nite Ize and the Seminole Heights Dog Pack to test LED products that make nighttime walks with your pup simpler and safer. With Daylight Savings Time ending, it gets darker earlier and the Nite Ize LED products make it easy to keep track of multiple pets in the dark.

The Seminole Heights Dog Pack typically convenes on Saturday mornings, so their members were excited to gather on a weeknight to light up the night.

Pictured below is the Nite Ize SpotLit Collar Light, which easily clips onto the D-ring of your pet’s collar or harness.  A simple push of a button lets you switch from a constant glow mode to an attention-grabbing flashing mode.

SpotLit Collar Light

We walked around the neighborhood and the SpotLit Collar Light attracted a lot of attention from passers-by, which is exactly what you want when walking in the dark.

We’ve met pups in the past that need to walk at unpopular hours due to leash aggression, so walking later at night is a necessity. Having a collar light will make those walks even safer.

SpotLit XL Rechargeable Collar Light

Darker dogs are especially difficult to see at night. The SpotLit Collar Light is necessity to ensure your night time walks are safe.

Nighttime Safety and Visibility For Dogs

We also tested out the NiteHowl Rechargeable LED Safety Necklace, which is made with flexible polymer that’s illuminated by bright LEDs and can be recharged for hours of nighttime fun and safety. The NiteHowl makes identifying multiple dogs easy with the ability to choose from one of three selectable colors (red, green, blue), plus a unique Disc-O mode. By illuminating the polymer with multiple colors at the same time, Disc-O mode creates a flowing color-blending pattern that’s as fun as it is functional.

A crowd favorite during the Pack Walk was the Nite Ize Leash Lit. The Microlight will help light the path ahead and keep your favorite furry friend and yourself seen and safe. Four Gear Tie legs are attached to the bright white light so the LeashLit can easily wrap around leashes, treat bags, belts, and more to create a conveniently accessible light that is always right at hand. The design allows it to be quickly attached or removed, as well as stand on its own for hands-free lighting. Last but not least, the LeashLit will always be ready to shine a light on the inglorious task of cleaning up after Fido.

The Future is Rechargeable: 8 Exciting New LED Products from 2019

Posted by Cassie Ryan on Aug 23, 2019 2:42:20 PM

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), each year Americans throw away more than three billion batteries. That’s billion—with a ‘B’. As proud supporters of organizations such as American Rivers and The Conservation Alliance, we at Nite Ize recognize the importance of responsibility in respect to our natural world. That’s why we’re converting many of our lighting and nighttime visibility products to micro-USB rechargeable power. This year alone, we introduced eight exciting LED products that offer the convenience of rechargeability while reducing battery waste. We call that a win/win!

1. Radiant 314 Rechargeable Lantern

Radiant 314 Rechargeable Lantern

This compact but mighty rechargeable lantern features bright white light as high as 314 lumens and low as 16, plus an amber mode that casts a gentle, night-vision saving illumination. It also features a built-in power bank that you can use to charge your devices from anywhere! Durable, drop-proof (up to 1 meter), and water resistant, this lantern is the perfect companion for outdoor adventures, backyard barbeques, and emergency home use.

2. Radiant Rechargeable Micro Lantern

Radiant Rechargeable Micro Lantern

The little brother in the family of Radiant Lanterns is the Rechargeable Micro Lantern. This small, clippable swivel light is perfect for everything from lighting a tent to bedside reading. The Micro Lantern features Disc-O Select technology, so you can choose between four different colors (red, green, blue and white), or keep it in fun, color-changing Disc-O mode. This pocket-sized light is water resistant and runs for up to 10 hours on a single charge.

3. Radiant 300 Headlamp

Radiant 300 Rechargeable Headlamp

Our rechargeable Radiant headlamp also got an upgrade in 2019. The Radiant 300 now offers 300 lumens of bright white light and features five modes plus lockout to prevent it from accidentally turning on and draining the battery during transportation. It is micro USB rechargeable and lasts between 4 and 36 hours (depending on light setting) on a single charge.

4. TagLit Rechargeable Magnetic LED Marker

Taglit Rechargeable Magnetic Marker

Being seen while you’re out at night is crucial to your safety, which is why we offer a wide variety of LED products to keep you visible in the evening and early morning hours. Our popular TagLit is now available in rechargeable form, and brighter than before. This little marker features a magnetic closure so you can easily attach it to clothing, hats, bags and more. Set it to steady glow or flash mode and you’re ready for evening runs, rides or walks with your dog.

5. SlapLit Rechargeable LED Slap Wrap

SlapLit Rechargeable LED Slap Wrap

Another one of our popular visibility products, the SlapLit LED Slap Wrap, also got a rechargeable upgrade this year. Slap it on your wrist, arm, or ankle and the bright 360˚ illumination will keep you visible during nighttime fitness and fun.

6. SpokeLit Rechargeable Wheel Light

SpokeLit Rechargeable Wheel Light

Side visibility while biking is paramount for safety, but too often ignored. Our iconic SpokeLit bike lights are now available in rechargeable Disc-O Select! The SpokeLit offers easy, tool-free installation, fits most bicycle wheels, is weather resistant, and runs for 6 hours per charge.

7. SpotLit XL Rechargeable Carabiner & Collar Light

SpotLit XL Rechargeable Collar Light

One of our most popular products (that you may already own) is the SpotLit carabiner light. Often clipped on dog collars, key chains, or bags, this little light is versatile, compact and convenient. The new SpotLit XL is not just larger, but bigger, brighter and, of course, rechargeable! As a Disc-O Select product, it features color-changing mode plus four selectable colors. This light is also great for households with multiple dogs – give each of them their own color and be able to tell who’s who in a pitch-black backyard on a moonless night.

8. INOVA T8R PowerSwitch Rechargeable Flashlight

INOVA T8R PowerSwitch Rechargeable Flashlight

If you're in the market for a high-performance flashlight that is as versatile as it is convenient, look no further than the new T8R in our INOVA line. This tactical-grade rechargeable flashlight packs 762 lumens and offers both bright white and red beams to preserve night vision. If you're in an environment where you don't have access to a charger, the T8R also works with two CR123 batteries.

Although we know we can’t solve the world’s problems with a little rechargeability, we certainly recognize the benefits of rechargeable products. If we can help put a dent in the 180,000 tons of batteries that end up in landfills each year, we’re going to make it happen.

How To Put Together The Ultimate New Puppy Gift Basket

Posted by Katie S on Jul 25, 2019 1:26:17 PM

The Ultimate New Puppy Gift Basket

There are few moments in life more exciting than bringing home a new puppy. In my life, I have been lucky enough to bring home three of the best dogs in the world. Very different dogs with very different personalities, but over the years each one taught me about love, loyalty, and friendship in ways that only the most devoted four-legged friends can. They also taught me a lot about surviving the energetic puppy years and thriving into the sunset ones. So, when a friend or family member is adopting a new dog into their family, I love putting together a gift basket with some of the essentials that have helped our household to maintain happy puppies and happy dog-parents. If you’re looking for gift ideas, below is the list of my favorites. If you’re thinking, “Why would I give a puppy gift?” then just watch this GIF for a bit:

puppydog tail

Without further ado, here is your ultimate new puppy gift guide:

New Puppy Gift Guide

1. Anything that Squeaks

The first couple months with a new puppy are basically about saving your house from destruction, both from accidents and from sharp little puppy teeth. The squeaky toys won’t last long, but they are essential to distract the new pup from chewing on everything else. I learned this the hard way. Daisy, my first dog on my own, destroyed my first apartment when she was bored. The molding – gone. The carpet – toast. The curtains – what fun she had pulling those down! Some dogs will even eat drywall. And you won’t believe how quickly they can do it. Vigilant supervision, endless entertainment, and exercise – these are the keys to saving your home from a new puppy.

2. The Gift of Exercise
Huck 'N' Tuck + GlowStreak Ball

A tired puppy is no longer a destructive puppy. The Huck ‘N Tuck by Nite Ize is my all-time favorite ball launcher. It comes with the LED GlowStreak ball so you can play into the night without losing it, and the launcher is a life-saver for shoulders (if the puppy has any retriever or herder in it, throwing the ball at least a thousand times a day will be necessary). The launcher is also collapsible so it’s convenient to tuck into your pocket or keep in the glovebox for quick stops at the dog park.

3. The Quickest Way to Their Heart is Via the Belly

Puppies are typically uncomplicated creatures. They simply want your attention, affection, and delicious treats all day long. Include a pack or two in your gift basket. I like to shop local, and we are lucky enough to have I and Love and You based in our Boulder backyard. They make tasty puppy food and treats that are perfect for bribery, distraction, and training.

SpotLit LED Collar Light
4. Light ‘Em Up for Safety

Dogs are great at getting into trouble and wiggling away unexpectedly. Nite Ize makes a host of products dedicated to keeping pets safe at night. The SpotLit LED Collar Light and NiteHowl Rechargeable LED Safety Necklace are two of my favorites. Not only do they keep pets safe, they are just plain fun to watch at night.

5. Safety, Safety, and More Safety

I can’t reiterate enough that dogs are great at getting into trouble. I have made more trips to the emergency vet than I’d like to admit. Throw a pet medical kit into your gift basket, especially for first-time or very outdoorsy dog owners. These ones from Adventure Medical Kits are my favorites and the larger ones have an instructional book written by a veterinarian to guide you through using the kit components in an emergency. If you are a really good friend, you can even gift your buddy pet insurance for the first year -  a great option for pet owners.

6. The Essentials

RadDog and TagLockEvery dog needs a good collar and leash – why not knock out two birds with one stone. The Nite Ize RadDog is a collar with a retractable leash built in – perfect for hitting the trail or dog park, places where you’ll want to be able to go quickly from unleashed to leashed and vice versa. Nite Ize even has a better way to attach dog tags to the collar too – S-Biner TagLocks. These might be my favorite/most practical item on this list because I hate the snug little split rings that come with dog tags. They are too little to actually attach to collars in any sort of reasonable way that doesn’t end in bleeding fingernails. Just throw these in the gift basket, the new dog owners will thank you endlessly.

7. Give The Gift of Silence

It turns out the jingling sound of dog tags drives my husband to near insanity. Hence, I discovered Quiet Spot Tag Silencers. Super easy to use, these just wrap around dog tags snugly to keep them from clinking together. In our case, they were a marriage saver.

8. Poop Prep

Pack-A-PooYep, it’s just a fact of life, and responsible dog owners need to be prepared on the go. The Pack-A-Poo has a super easy-to-use design that clips on with an S-Biner, but what I especially love are the compostable bags that come with it. When wrapping up your dog’s poo, it seems better not to be preserving it for 10,000+ years in a plastic bag.

Sweet PeaThe adorable puppy enjoying this gift basket in the photos is named Sweet Pea. She was recently adopted from The Humane Society of Boulder Valley, which houses a host of other wonderful furry companions. The family who adopted her received the gift basket along with their new forever friend.

Stocking Stuffers from Nite Ize

Posted by Dave Taylor on Dec 18, 2018 1:38:21 PM

The average American spends over $700 on holiday gifts each year. The very best gifts are often small and thoughtful, rather than big-ticket items. Famous American painter Norman Rockwell would undoubtedly have called them stocking stuffers; the kind of small gifts that fit perfectly into that stocking hanging from a nail over the fireplace.

Modest, useful gifts are always a welcome way to show you're thinking about someone, whether or not you actually have stockings hanging from your mantel or a living room covered in holiday decorations.

Classic stocking stuffer gifts are tangerines, walnuts and, in my family, rolls of stamps. These days, stocking stuffers are distinctly more tech-and-gadget oriented, and that’s exactly what we love to create here at Nite Ize: products that make your life simpler, safer, and more fun.

Without further ado, here's our favorite stocking stuffers to sweeten every seasonal stocking, whether literal or just figurative…

DOOHICKEY® KEYCHAIN KNIFE

Whether your gift recipient is always looking for the next great camping location or just know how convenient it is to have a package-opening, apple-peeling, multi-purpose knife easily accessible, the Doohickey Keychain Knife is a winning gift. It’s small, lightweight, closes firmly and safely, and is light enough to clip onto your belt, backpack, keychain and/or purse. Better yet, it comes in a bunch of delightful colors. The Nite Ize DoohicKey line offers an entire line of everyday carry tools that fit right on a key chain. One of our favorites is the Doohickey® Fishkey™ Tool. What fisherwoman (or fisherman) wouldn’t love this addition to their kit?

GEAR TIES

Whether you’re organizing wires behind your desk or securing items in the back of your truck, there’s nothing quite like a Nite Ize Gear Tie®. Turns out that they also make terrific presents, whether the recipient is dealing with life in the dorms, looking for a better way to bundle their yoga mat, or a DIYer who likes to keep everything organized while on the job.

Start with one or more of our Pro Packs. We're a big fan of the little 3” Gear Ties that have a million-and-one uses at home, work, or in the car. It’s surprising just how useful it is to have a reusable rubber twist tie that lasts year after year (and use after use). You can’t just have one!

S-Biners

Another great option we have at Nite Ize is our S-Biner® line. Think of carabiners reinvented and redesigned to be even more useful, versatile, and convenient whether you're on the go, organizing the garage, or trying to find a way to keep your kiddo's water bottle attached to their backpack.

The unique Slidelock® 360º Magnetic Locking Dual Carabiner  is a fun and functional spin on the dual-carabiner design. With locking steel gates on each side, this product functions like a class S-Biner, but with a big twist – the two carabiners are connected using a powerful magnet, making them easy to separate. This is ridiculously useful whether you want to quickly detach a set of keys, keep your fishing net at the ready, or hanging a multi-tool from a work belt.

Micro Flashlight

You can never have too many high quality flashlights, and here at Nite Ize we make a wide variety of them. Useful when clipped to a backpack, stashed in a purse, or on a kid's bedside table – a good, reliable flashlight can also be a lifesaver when the power fails.

But to fit into that mythic stocking, you probably aren’t going to want to gift one of our large professional-grade tactical lights, which are more of an under-the-tree kind of gift. Instead, check out our Inova® Microlight STS™ Flashlight as a fun and more modest alternative:

Most fun variation that turns out to be quite useful? The BugLit® LED Micro Flashlight. It’s the perfect critter to be peeking out of that stocking on Christmas morning!

BGT_Feature_00_n

Whatever fun and pint-sized gifts you share with your loved ones this holiday season, we wish you all the best from the entire Nite Ize team!

Of Happy Dogs and Dog Toys

Posted by Dave Taylor on Nov 20, 2018 4:19:29 PM

It’s been a few years since I had a dog, but I still love dogs and we definitely have a very pet friendly household. Like most dog lovers, I don’t have a huge bias regarding breed and understand the attraction of a lapdog like a Chihuahua or Teacup Poodle and the fun of a bigger dog. I also learned long ago that if you think of a dog as being roughly the equivalent of a 3-4 year old child, you’ll have a much easier time understanding their emotions and reactions to different situations.

As a result, I sometimes am offered the chance to dog sit a friend’s pup when they’re busy or have to head out of town for a short trip. My standard answer is an enthusiastic yes, and doubly so if the dog’s a larger breed, my personal preference with canines. The latest dog to make my short list is my friend's Pit Bull mix, Amber.

This is where the Nite Ize pet line proves invaluable, from reflective leashes and illuminated safety necklaces to play toys. Here’s what I have in my dog sitting kit to ensure things go smoothly: The Huck ‘n Tuck® GlowStreak®, a rechargeable NiteHowl® LED Safety Necklace and an S-Biner® TagLock™ to ensure their ID tag stays attached to their collar.

HUCK ‘N TUCK GLOWSTREAK

Huck 'N Tuck GlowStreak

Big or little, young or old, every dog loves to have fun, run around and chase things! Whether they bring the tossed toy back is another story, but regardless, this is where the GlowStreak is a true standout. Imagine a tough ball that lights up and glows as you launch it far into the dog park or along the trail. What dog wouldn’t be transfixed, eager to run and grab it?

The Huck 'N Tuck GlowStreak includes a collapsible ball thrower that easily fits in your pocket or a drawer, then extends to 24" for maximum ball launching power. From the dog’s perspective, they'll be stoked that fetch doesn't have to end when the sun goes down since the GlowStreak lights up with a color-changing LED!

NITEHOWL LED SAFETY NECKLACE

NightHowl LED Safety Necklace

Just as we humans forget what we’re wearing during a busy day, dogs don’t pay much attention when you tie a bandana around their neck or slip on a collar with an ID tag. Useful, but boring when compared to the super cool NiteHowl LED Safety Necklace. It’s an illuminated, battery powered safety necklace that will help everyone else see them and help you find the pup if she decides to bolt after a nocturnal squirrel.

What’s really cool about the NiteHowl, though, is that it’s made with a flexible polymer material that lets you easily cut it to size. Whether your howler has a tiny Chihuahua-sized neck or is a big dog like my buddy’s Pit Bull, the NiteHowl fits perfectly. This is also a great accessory for dogs who join their guardians camping and on backpacking adventures, ensuring they don’t just vanish into the dark chasing after a strange noise.

S-BINER TAGLOCK

S-Biner TagLock

Any dog I’m going to dogsit must have a collar and ID tag, even though it’s a nightmare to work with those annoying split ring devices to attach the ID tag to the collar. Enter the terrific S-Biner TagLock. It’s a really simple idea: The S-Biner has already proven itself invaluable for camping, backpacking, skiing and all sorts of other uses. Why not use it for pet ID tags? The TagLock is the perfect size for attaching a pet ID to a collar. It’s safe, it’s rugged and weatherproof. And it’s easy. Why make it hard on yourself attaching that ID tag when you can use an S-Biner?

Bonus: This works great for cats who have ID tags on their collars too.

WE LOVE DOGS

There’s something really delightful about spending time with dogs, whether they’re shy or rambunctious. It’s why we humans have such a close affinity to dogs in just about every culture around the world. A happy dog is also a source of joy for every dog lover and happy dogs are safe, busy and active dogs.

As for me, Amber looks like she needs to go for a walk so it's time to slip a NiteHowl LED Safety Necklace on her and go for a stroll around the neighborhood.

Stay Seen, Safe, and Smiling on Halloween

Posted by Dave Taylor on Oct 25, 2018 3:52:25 PM

All Hallow’s Eve is coming up. Your kids know it as Halloween and they’ve probably already been excitedly discussing costumes, candy and treats with you and their friends. But walking around at night can also be dangerous because, while some communities have lots of street lights, there are plenty of roads where it’s quite dark between homes.

DSC_0306-R1_flat

We at Nite Ize have lots of fun solutions and tips to help you and your little ones stay safe while trick-or-treating -- and best of all, these light up products are all super bright and use replaceable batteries. Costumes may not make it through the night in one piece, but these fun light-up products can long after the candy is all eaten for night time walks, early morning runs, or family bike rides around the neighborhood.

Kids love hanging LED Mini Glowsticks™ from their trick-or-treat containers, which are perfect for keeping them visible and casting light into their treat bag to assess their booty. And since kids are more likely to lose their own shoes than their candy buckets on Halloween, parents get to rest assured that the kids will never be far from their light-up glowsticks.

DSC_0409

Pets, parents, and kids all benefit from wearable illumination, and products like the NiteHowl™ LED Safety Necklace are a great addition for every family member. Young'uns get a kick out of the festive lighting, which can be set to glow or flash. For the furry family members, these can be cut down to size making them perfect for Pugs and Great Danes alike. And parents who don't necessary want to dress up in a costume, can still partake in a little extra fun while escorting kids.

NHO-10-R3_F_1020b_SQRGB

Ditch the candle and add a little extra color to your Jack-O-Lanterns by putting a Disc-O Select NiteGem inside. This waterproof light means that a little rain (or snow) won't put a damper on your pumpkin fun, plus you can choose from one of six colors or leave it in color-changing Disc-O mode.

DSC_0385

If you are trick-or-treating in a particularly dark area, another great addition that you can reuse for your night runs or winter biking is the LED TagLit™. With strong magnets built inside, these can be clipped to shirts, capes, or wolverine fur to ensure that drivers see your little ones well before anyone crosses the street.

TGL-35-R3_F_1445_sQRGB

One of my personal favorites is the BugLit®  LED Micro Flashlight because of its legs. These can easily be twisted to cling to various parts of a costume, and in the dark they look creepy. You can also get creative and glue glow-in-the-dark googly-eyes to ‘em for extra creepiness. And most kids love a little benign creepy!

BGT03W-07-1703_F_0001_SQRGBFinally, we parents know the challenge of walking around with little ones excited about trick-or-treating and getting way more candy than is probably good for them. That’s why a hot beverage - or other brew of your choice - tucked into a Traveler™ Drink Holster might well make this one of the best family adventures you’ll have all year!

How to Throw an Epic Dog Birthday Party

Posted by Katie S on Aug 12, 2016 3:42:56 PM

Group_Shot_2-7.jpg

A little background for you before I get into the nitty gritty of dog birthday planning - let me introduce you to the birthday girl, Daisy:

Daisy__Cake.jpg

In case it's not immediately apparent from the photo, Daisy is the best Labrador-mutt sidekick of all time. She hikes, fishes, naps and cuddles like a champ. For the past 11 years, Daisy has been an "only child", but life is about to change drastically for her as she's going to get a human sibling this fall. So, we (and I use the term "we" generously as my husband is more of an obliging enabler to my crazy dog-loving antics) figured, "what better reason to give her a big ole birthday bash before she relinquishes her only child status?" Meanwhile, I thought I'd share a few tips with you about what I've learned.

Now, on to the nitty gritty of dog birthday planning...

The key to throwing any successful party is to go big or go home. So, chances are Step 1 will be easy for you (you are, after all, the person reading an article titled "How to Throw an Epic Dog Birthday") it is simply to embrace your inner-crazy dog person. Will your friends think you're crazy for throwing a dog birthday party? Maybe. But, chances are they already know you are, and trust me, they're still going to come because let's be honest, who doesn't love free beer, snacks, and a reason to celebrate - especially a cute, fluffy reason?

Step 2: Choose a Location

You may love the idea of a bunch of dogs galloping around your house, or it might be your nightmare. If it's the latter, maybe look into hosting it at your local dog park, or there are even doggy day cares that will let you rent out their pools and host a doggy pool-party. We decided to go with the backyard party and to keep the chaos at home.

Step 3: Plan Your Activities

You are going to have a host of people and pets looking to be entertained. Lucky for you, just throw on some music and the people will probably be entertained, or at least preoccupied enough with their pets not to think about much else. We did set up a little makeshift station in the yard for folks who wanted to get a family portrait taken with their dogs which seemed to be a hit.

J__T_with_Molly_Dog-9.jpgPhoto_Booth-1.jpgLongman__His_Dogs-11.jpg

For the furry guests of honor, we held a little "doggy rave". I work for an awesome company called Nite Ize, who sponsored our activity for the night with a host of LED dog toys and lights for our guests. Each four-legged guest received a Nite Howl LED Necklace, a SpotLit Collar Light, a GlowStreak Ball, and a Flashflight Dog Discuit. So, once the sun set, we lit up the backyard, cranked the music, and let the dogs run wild with their new toys.

Daisy_Ball_Extravaganza-3.jpgDoggy_Rave_1-4.jpgCooper_Catching_Ball-1.jpg

Step 4: Invitations & Guests

I like to use PaperlessPost for online invitations, they have a lot of cute easy-to-design options but there are tons of other user-friendly email invite sites out there as well.

Invitation-8.jpg

Step 5: Food & Drinks

Let there be cake! You can find dog bakeries everywhere that make great birthday cakes specifically for dogs. If you happen to be in the Boulder, CO area, our favorite is P.C.'s Pantry which makes these apparently delicious "Barkday Cakes" and we found out their most popular selling flavor is liver - yum.

Let_There_Be_Cake-10.jpg

On the "people food" front, we made it easy on ourselves going with pizza, beer, and cupcakes. One thing I recommend doing before planning your menu though, is to check out the ASPCA's website, they have a helpful list of foods that can be toxic or harmful to pets that you’ll want to avoid. (Ok disclaimer - so beer is on their list, but just make sure your guests are responsible and not giving beer/alcohol to dogs - hopefully this shouldn't be a tough request).

Step 6: Puppy-proofing & Decorating

If you're having the party at home, be sure to do some puppy proofing. A roving hoard of dogs can get into all sorts of trouble. Check the fence for anywhere little dogs might escape and block off areas like stairways and carpet to keep all your fuzzy friends in an easy-to-spot area. It's also a good idea to set up a little "time out" area for dogs that might be getting a little over-excited or worn out during the party.

Doggy_Time_Out_Sign-5.jpgNo_Paws_Upstairs_Sign-12.jpg

Step 7: Party Time - Sit back and let the chaos begin!
