Light Up Your Nighttime Dog Walks

By Pet Photographer Adam Goldberg, AGoldPhoto

Make nighttime walks with your pup simpler and safer

We recently teamed up with Nite Ize and the Seminole Heights Dog Pack to test LED products that make nighttime walks with your pup simpler and safer. With Daylight Savings Time ending, it gets darker earlier and the Nite Ize LED products make it easy to keep track of multiple pets in the dark.

The Seminole Heights Dog Pack typically convenes on Saturday mornings, so their members were excited to gather on a weeknight to light up the night.

Pictured below is the Nite Ize SpotLit Collar Light, which easily clips onto the D-ring of your pet’s collar or harness.  A simple push of a button lets you switch from a constant glow mode to an attention-grabbing flashing mode.

SpotLit Collar Light

We walked around the neighborhood and the SpotLit Collar Light attracted a lot of attention from passers-by, which is exactly what you want when walking in the dark.

We’ve met pups in the past that need to walk at unpopular hours due to leash aggression, so walking later at night is a necessity. Having a collar light will make those walks even safer.

SpotLit XL Rechargeable Collar Light

Darker dogs are especially difficult to see at night. The SpotLit Collar Light is necessity to ensure your night time walks are safe.

Nighttime Safety and Visibility For Dogs

We also tested out the NiteHowl Rechargeable LED Safety Necklace, which is made with flexible polymer that’s illuminated by bright LEDs and can be recharged for hours of nighttime fun and safety. The NiteHowl makes identifying multiple dogs easy with the ability to choose from one of three selectable colors (red, green, blue), plus a unique Disc-O mode. By illuminating the polymer with multiple colors at the same time, Disc-O mode creates a flowing color-blending pattern that’s as fun as it is functional.

A crowd favorite during the Pack Walk was the Nite Ize Leash Lit. The Microlight will help light the path ahead and keep your favorite furry friend and yourself seen and safe. Four Gear Tie legs are attached to the bright white light so the LeashLit can easily wrap around leashes, treat bags, belts, and more to create a conveniently accessible light that is always right at hand. The design allows it to be quickly attached or removed, as well as stand on its own for hands-free lighting. Last but not least, the LeashLit will always be ready to shine a light on the inglorious task of cleaning up after Fido.

Stay safe with your pups at night!

The Future is Rechargeable: 8 Exciting New LED Products from 2019

Posted by Cassie Ryan on Aug 23, 2019 2:42:20 PM

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), each year Americans throw away more than three billion batteries. That’s billion—with a ‘B’. As proud supporters of organizations such as American Rivers and The Conservation Alliance, we at Nite Ize recognize the importance of responsibility in respect to our natural world. That’s why we’re converting many of our lighting and nighttime visibility products to micro-USB rechargeable power. This year alone, we introduced eight exciting LED products that offer the convenience of rechargeability while reducing battery waste. We call that a win/win!

1. Radiant 314 Rechargeable Lantern

Radiant 314 Rechargeable Lantern

This compact but mighty rechargeable lantern features bright white light as high as 314 lumens and low as 16, plus an amber mode that casts a gentle, night-vision saving illumination. It also features a built-in power bank that you can use to charge your devices from anywhere! Durable, drop-proof (up to 1 meter), and water resistant, this lantern is the perfect companion for outdoor adventures, backyard barbeques, and emergency home use.

2. Radiant Rechargeable Micro Lantern

Radiant Rechargeable Micro Lantern

The little brother in the family of Radiant Lanterns is the Rechargeable Micro Lantern. This small, clippable swivel light is perfect for everything from lighting a tent to bedside reading. The Micro Lantern features Disc-O Select technology, so you can choose between four different colors (red, green, blue and white), or keep it in fun, color-changing Disc-O mode. This pocket-sized light is water resistant and runs for up to 10 hours on a single charge.

3. Radiant 300 Headlamp

Radiant 300 Rechargeable Headlamp

Our rechargeable Radiant headlamp also got an upgrade in 2019. The Radiant 300 now offers 300 lumens of bright white light and features five modes plus lockout to prevent it from accidentally turning on and draining the battery during transportation. It is micro USB rechargeable and lasts between 4 and 36 hours (depending on light setting) on a single charge.

4. TagLit Rechargeable Magnetic LED Marker

Taglit Rechargeable Magnetic Marker

Being seen while you’re out at night is crucial to your safety, which is why we offer a wide variety of LED products to keep you visible in the evening and early morning hours. Our popular TagLit is now available in rechargeable form, and brighter than before. This little marker features a magnetic closure so you can easily attach it to clothing, hats, bags and more. Set it to steady glow or flash mode and you’re ready for evening runs, rides or walks with your dog.

5. SlapLit Rechargeable LED Slap Wrap

SlapLit Rechargeable LED Slap Wrap

Another one of our popular visibility products, the SlapLit LED Slap Wrap, also got a rechargeable upgrade this year. Slap it on your wrist, arm, or ankle and the bright 360˚ illumination will keep you visible during nighttime fitness and fun.

6. SpokeLit Rechargeable Wheel Light

SpokeLit Rechargeable Wheel Light

Side visibility while biking is paramount for safety, but too often ignored. Our iconic SpokeLit bike lights are now available in rechargeable Disc-O Select! The SpokeLit offers easy, tool-free installation, fits most bicycle wheels, is weather resistant, and runs for 6 hours per charge.

7. SpotLit XL Rechargeable Carabiner & Collar Light

SpotLit XL Rechargeable Collar Light

One of our most popular products (that you may already own) is the SpotLit carabiner light. Often clipped on dog collars, key chains, or bags, this little light is versatile, compact and convenient. The new SpotLit XL is not just larger, but bigger, brighter and, of course, rechargeable! As a Disc-O Select product, it features color-changing mode plus four selectable colors. This light is also great for households with multiple dogs – give each of them their own color and be able to tell who’s who in a pitch-black backyard on a moonless night.

8. INOVA T8R PowerSwitch Rechargeable Flashlight

INOVA T8R PowerSwitch Rechargeable Flashlight

If you're in the market for a high-performance flashlight that is as versatile as it is convenient, look no further than the new T8R in our INOVA line. This tactical-grade rechargeable flashlight packs 762 lumens and offers both bright white and red beams to preserve night vision. If you're in an environment where you don't have access to a charger, the T8R also works with two CR123 batteries.

Although we know we can’t solve the world’s problems with a little rechargeability, we certainly recognize the benefits of rechargeable products. If we can help put a dent in the 180,000 tons of batteries that end up in landfills each year, we’re going to make it happen.

How To Put Together The Ultimate New Puppy Gift Basket

Posted by Katie S on Jul 25, 2019 1:26:17 PM

The Ultimate New Puppy Gift Basket

There are few moments in life more exciting than bringing home a new puppy. In my life, I have been lucky enough to bring home three of the best dogs in the world. Very different dogs with very different personalities, but over the years each one taught me about love, loyalty, and friendship in ways that only the most devoted four-legged friends can. They also taught me a lot about surviving the energetic puppy years and thriving into the sunset ones. So, when a friend or family member is adopting a new dog into their family, I love putting together a gift basket with some of the essentials that have helped our household to maintain happy puppies and happy dog-parents. If you’re looking for gift ideas, below is the list of my favorites. If you’re thinking, “Why would I give a puppy gift?” then just watch this GIF for a bit:

puppydog tail

Without further ado, here is your ultimate new puppy gift guide:

New Puppy Gift Guide

1. Anything that Squeaks

The first couple months with a new puppy are basically about saving your house from destruction, both from accidents and from sharp little puppy teeth. The squeaky toys won’t last long, but they are essential to distract the new pup from chewing on everything else. I learned this the hard way. Daisy, my first dog on my own, destroyed my first apartment when she was bored. The molding – gone. The carpet – toast. The curtains – what fun she had pulling those down! Some dogs will even eat drywall. And you won’t believe how quickly they can do it. Vigilant supervision, endless entertainment, and exercise – these are the keys to saving your home from a new puppy.

2. The Gift of Exercise
Huck 'N' Tuck + GlowStreak Ball

A tired puppy is no longer a destructive puppy. The Huck ‘N Tuck by Nite Ize is my all-time favorite ball launcher. It comes with the LED GlowStreak ball so you can play into the night without losing it, and the launcher is a life-saver for shoulders (if the puppy has any retriever or herder in it, throwing the ball at least a thousand times a day will be necessary). The launcher is also collapsible so it’s convenient to tuck into your pocket or keep in the glovebox for quick stops at the dog park.

3. The Quickest Way to Their Heart is Via the Belly

Puppies are typically uncomplicated creatures. They simply want your attention, affection, and delicious treats all day long. Include a pack or two in your gift basket. I like to shop local, and we are lucky enough to have I and Love and You based in our Boulder backyard. They make tasty puppy food and treats that are perfect for bribery, distraction, and training.

SpotLit LED Collar Light
4. Light ‘Em Up for Safety

Dogs are great at getting into trouble and wiggling away unexpectedly. Nite Ize makes a host of products dedicated to keeping pets safe at night. The SpotLit LED Collar Light and NiteHowl Rechargeable LED Safety Necklace are two of my favorites. Not only do they keep pets safe, they are just plain fun to watch at night.

5. Safety, Safety, and More Safety

I can’t reiterate enough that dogs are great at getting into trouble. I have made more trips to the emergency vet than I’d like to admit. Throw a pet medical kit into your gift basket, especially for first-time or very outdoorsy dog owners. These ones from Adventure Medical Kits are my favorites and the larger ones have an instructional book written by a veterinarian to guide you through using the kit components in an emergency. If you are a really good friend, you can even gift your buddy pet insurance for the first year -  a great option for pet owners.

6. The Essentials

RadDog and TagLockEvery dog needs a good collar and leash – why not knock out two birds with one stone. The Nite Ize RadDog is a collar with a retractable leash built in – perfect for hitting the trail or dog park, places where you’ll want to be able to go quickly from unleashed to leashed and vice versa. Nite Ize even has a better way to attach dog tags to the collar too – S-Biner TagLocks. These might be my favorite/most practical item on this list because I hate the snug little split rings that come with dog tags. They are too little to actually attach to collars in any sort of reasonable way that doesn’t end in bleeding fingernails. Just throw these in the gift basket, the new dog owners will thank you endlessly.

7. Give The Gift of Silence

It turns out the jingling sound of dog tags drives my husband to near insanity. Hence, I discovered Quiet Spot Tag Silencers. Super easy to use, these just wrap around dog tags snugly to keep them from clinking together. In our case, they were a marriage saver.

8. Poop Prep

Pack-A-PooYep, it’s just a fact of life, and responsible dog owners need to be prepared on the go. The Pack-A-Poo has a super easy-to-use design that clips on with an S-Biner, but what I especially love are the compostable bags that come with it. When wrapping up your dog’s poo, it seems better not to be preserving it for 10,000+ years in a plastic bag.

Sweet PeaThe adorable puppy enjoying this gift basket in the photos is named Sweet Pea. She was recently adopted from The Humane Society of Boulder Valley, which houses a host of other wonderful furry companions. The family who adopted her received the gift basket along with their new forever friend.

Nite Ize 2018 Field Team Gift Guide

Posted by Cassie Ryan on Dec 7, 2018 2:16:58 PM

For this year’s Holiday Gift Guide, we asked our Field Team to send us their top two to four Nite Ize products they are giving this season. As expected, Gear Ties came in as a very popular stocking stuffer. Check out the full list from our team and get into the spirit!

Anthony Johnson: Action Adventurer & Outdoor Photographer

“The Steelie car mount is our go-to for gifting. It is something that everyone can use, and a great stocking stuffer.”

“We also tend to gift the Nite Ize Radiant 300 Rechargeable Lantern. We've given these to our family and friends who enjoy the outdoors, whether through backpacking or camping or just enjoying grilling on their back porch. It is also fantastic that you can charge other USB devices off the lantern, making this particularly valuable gift for friends and family who spend time in the backwoods.”

“ Finally, for our cycling friends, we have given the Nite Ize Rechargeable Bike Light. You can never have too many bike lights, and these are so bright and rechargeable. The beam is great and makes it easy to see for early morning and evening rides. The multiple settings also allow you to use the lights to alert cars you're on the road. It's a ready safety feature.”

Joe Allen: Outdoor Sportsman, HuntCo on The Pursuit Channel

“I always have 3 or 4 attached to my pack in the field. The uses are infinite. On a particular occasion I used one Gear Tie to secure all four legs before loaded this deer into the bed of a truck.”

Gear Tie Reusable Rubber Twist Tie

“This is another staple of my field pack to have handy in a pinch. I pulled out my lantern during this alligator hunt for extra light while securing the jaws and tagging the gator.”

“Our lamps are with us on every hunt to get us in and out in the dark. The red light option provides great light that isn’t as offensive to wild animals.”

INOVA STS Headlamp

“The S-Biner stays on every pack to help attach the extras.”

Jason Epperson: Family Travel & Adventure Blogger

“We love the SlapLit LED Bracelets for the kids. They're a great way to keep track of the kids when they’re running around outside at night, at home or in a campground.”

SlapLit LED Slap Wraps

“Gear Ties are great for any handyperson to wrap up extension cords and hoses, but they're also great for kids to play with to make 3D shapes.”

Willi Schmidt: Outdoor Sportsman

“S-Biners are a must for me in the field. I keep a couple attached to my backpack at all times, making it very convenient to attach items to the outside of my pack, quickly and easily. Whether they are plastic or metal, they don't add any meaningful weight and they get a lot of use.”

S-Biner Dual Carabiner

“I keep Gear Ties in my pack and in my truck. Many times they have come in handy, most notably when my truck's wheel lining was coming loose. They were the only thing that would work and they kept the truck together for the remainder of the hunt and the return drive home.”

Gear Tie Reusable Twist Tie

“This is a go-to lantern on my hunting adventures. With 300 lumens, it gives off plenty of light in a cabin, tent or even in the back of a truck. The ability to re-charge the battery and charge other electronic devices from the lantern make it very practical.”

“The Inova STS headlamp by Nite Ize is an absolute must for me when hunting.  It gives me hands free light for going into my hunting area. The Swipe-To-Shine, 265 lumens is easy to use and plenty bright. The ability use the red light and not spook game as an added bonus.”

Heidi Kumm: Fitness Buff & Dog Lover

“We love the dog stuff, especially the light up toys now that it's dark out before we get home from work! The GlowStreak ball + Flashflight Dog Discuit are a daily go-to!”

Flashflight Dog Discuit LED Flying Disc

Jose Flores: Outdoor Sportsman

“I love the Steelies. Whether I’m in my boat, truck, UTV, or wherever, I find something I can stick it to!”

Steelie Vent Mount Kit

“We love the dog stuff also! The light-up ball and flying disc are easy favorites for our dogs, as it’s all they can play with outside after 4 PM here in Alaska!”

“This season I started to use the lanterns and headlamps much more. I really like the new design on the headlamps. The rechargeable option for the lanterns was a hit this fall.”

Radiant 300 Rechargeable Lantern

Tara Schatz: Action Adventurer & Dog Trainer

"In the winter, we have no choice but to walk our pups in the dark. We use the Spotlit clip-on LED lights to keep our dark dogs visible to others, whether we're on the trail or walking through town."

SpotLit LED Carabiner Light

"Gear ties are indispensable for hikers, campers, and outdoor adventurers. We use them to pack our backpacks, keep our gear inside of our canoe, and organizing for road trips."

"I take a lot of solo road trips, and the Steelie Dash Mount is the best smartphone mount I've ever used. It provides easy access to my maps and my music."

Rob “Reker” Kretsch: Outdoor Sportsman

“As stocking stuffers, I’m giving out the See’em Spoke Lights for the little one’s new bike and Gear Ties and CamJam Tie Down straps for all the adults. The Gear Ties are by far the most used piece of gear I own.”

Mike Hanson, Disc Dog Trainer Extraordinaire

Posted by Dave Taylor on Aug 16, 2018 10:00:00 AM

There are a lot of different customers who rely on Nite Ize gear, but few have cuter co-workers than Mike Hanson. Mike is a member of the Nite Ize Field Team, a disc dog trainer and has traveled the United States competing with his various dogs at flying disc competitions. We caught up with him for this interview…

Q: Right off the bat, all your dogs are female:  Jordan, SiZZle, and, MaggEY. Why female? Are they better at catching or staying focused?

I prefer females based on personality. They have a touch of individualism that when trained correctly, makes for a good team.

the-girls

Q: Tell us all about your dogs! Tell us their names, ages, how  they joined your family and their personalities.

MaggEY – 12-year-old Border Collie mix. She is my first dog and the pack leader of the house. She has the best personality and is the best dog I have ever owned. She was rescued in Colorado Springs, CO. Her litter was thrown into a field, and she was the only dog that made it. When a group went out to look for them, they found her under a tree stump whimpering. She went on to win five Colorado State Championships, three World Championships, and has performed before hundreds of thousands of people. She has performed for all of the major Denver sports teams and local colleges. I am truly lucky to have her come into my life.

Cooper – 11-year-old Border Collie mix. He was rescued in Paonia, CO. His disc career was cut short due to a freak accident in which he jumped off of a third floor balcony of an apartment complex. He survived the fall, but his budding disc career was over. He now has the best life a dog could have at our house--chasing squirrels and ensuring there are no monsters under our daughters bed.

Jordan – 8-year-old Border Collie. She was rescued in Gunnison, CO. She is the smartest dog I have ever owned. She learns so fast and is always willing to work. She might be cross-eyed, however, because she can’t catch a disc very well at all. She enjoys going for hikes and playing disc golf with me when she is not pretending to be a disc dog.

SiZZle – 2-year-old Australian Shepherd/Border Collie/Cattle Dog mix. She came out of the birth canal chasing a disc. She has so much energy, and is always willing and wanting to please. She is our “up and comer” and is turning into an amazing dog. I can’t wait to see where she takes us.

Q: How did you get into training your dogs to catch flying discs? Most dogs live for fun, but bringing a stick back is a lot easier than jumping up and catching something mid-flight!

We went to a competition in Littleton, CO for the Colorado Disc Dogs. MaggEY and I spent the day watching them and at the end of the day, they gave us a disc and a couple of tips. The next day I took her out, gave her a throw, she ran it down, and we were hooked. From there we went and learned online from watching YouTube routines. The rest is history.

sizzle-soars

Q: What competitions have you participated in with your dogs?

We compete in freestyle competitions where you do a two-minute routine with tricks set to music. You are judged on style, athleticism, teamwork, and overall presentation. We also do a “Toss and Catch” competition where you have a 40-yard field with different bonus zones and try to get as many catches as possible in one minute. A fast dog can get five throws to the furthest zone in one minute.  One of our favorite competitions is a long distance competition called “The Hero Cup” where you throw as far as you can and have your dog catch it. I have had catches past 87 yards before.

Q: When you're not tossing discs for your girls to catch, what's your day job?

I run a youth sports program for kids age 3-14 in Littleton, CO. We take kids that have never played sports before, teach them, and give them and opportunity to play. We help over 5,000 kids play sports each year.

Q: What's your favorite Nite Ize product?

The Pack-A-Poo® Bag Dispenser is a game changer for a guy that picks up a lot of dog poop. The fact you can wind your poop bags back up into the dispenser is pretty awesome. I also use the Gear Ties® in my cars for everything. I especially like them to tie the dog bowls to the front of the crates. The SpotLit® is great to have on road trips to keep track of your dogs at night as well.

flying-jump

Q: Back in 2015 you and your dog did the NFL halftime show during Broncos vs. Colts. What did you do and what was that experience like?

My friends and I did the halftime show for the opening night of the NFL season. When MaggEY and I got out to the field, there was no one else on the field- just her and I under the lights at Sports Authority Field in front of 80,000 people doing what we both love to do the most. She didn’t drop a single disc that night. It is an experience that leaves me with goose bumps every time I think about it or tell the story. It is a moment I will remember for the rest of my life.

Q: Ever thought about training cats to catch flying discs? How do you imagine that'd go?

I am allergic to cats, LOL. I am sure someone could train them to catch a disc. Good luck on them bringing it back, though!

Mike adds: I love my family and the fact that this sport can be enjoyed by all of us. My daughter, Emma, won the 7-and -Under World Championship with MaggEY last year. This sport allows us to travel and meet friends we would have never known if it wasn’t for our dogs. It is amazing how much these dogs have changed my life and all it took was rescuing one. I encourage everyone to go out and rescue your next pet.

How to Throw an Epic Dog Birthday Party

Posted by Katie S on Aug 12, 2016 3:42:56 PM

Group_Shot_2-7.jpg

A little background for you before I get into the nitty gritty of dog birthday planning - let me introduce you to the birthday girl, Daisy:

Daisy__Cake.jpg

In case it's not immediately apparent from the photo, Daisy is the best Labrador-mutt sidekick of all time. She hikes, fishes, naps and cuddles like a champ. For the past 11 years, Daisy has been an "only child", but life is about to change drastically for her as she's going to get a human sibling this fall. So, we (and I use the term "we" generously as my husband is more of an obliging enabler to my crazy dog-loving antics) figured, "what better reason to give her a big ole birthday bash before she relinquishes her only child status?" Meanwhile, I thought I'd share a few tips with you about what I've learned.

Now, on to the nitty gritty of dog birthday planning...

The key to throwing any successful party is to go big or go home. So, chances are Step 1 will be easy for you (you are, after all, the person reading an article titled "How to Throw an Epic Dog Birthday") it is simply to embrace your inner-crazy dog person. Will your friends think you're crazy for throwing a dog birthday party? Maybe. But, chances are they already know you are, and trust me, they're still going to come because let's be honest, who doesn't love free beer, snacks, and a reason to celebrate - especially a cute, fluffy reason?

Step 2: Choose a Location

You may love the idea of a bunch of dogs galloping around your house, or it might be your nightmare. If it's the latter, maybe look into hosting it at your local dog park, or there are even doggy day cares that will let you rent out their pools and host a doggy pool-party. We decided to go with the backyard party and to keep the chaos at home.

Step 3: Plan Your Activities

You are going to have a host of people and pets looking to be entertained. Lucky for you, just throw on some music and the people will probably be entertained, or at least preoccupied enough with their pets not to think about much else. We did set up a little makeshift station in the yard for folks who wanted to get a family portrait taken with their dogs which seemed to be a hit.

J__T_with_Molly_Dog-9.jpgPhoto_Booth-1.jpgLongman__His_Dogs-11.jpg

For the furry guests of honor, we held a little "doggy rave". I work for an awesome company called Nite Ize, who sponsored our activity for the night with a host of LED dog toys and lights for our guests. Each four-legged guest received a Nite Howl LED Necklace, a SpotLit Collar Light, a GlowStreak Ball, and a Flashflight Dog Discuit. So, once the sun set, we lit up the backyard, cranked the music, and let the dogs run wild with their new toys.

Daisy_Ball_Extravaganza-3.jpgDoggy_Rave_1-4.jpgCooper_Catching_Ball-1.jpg

Step 4: Invitations & Guests

I like to use PaperlessPost for online invitations, they have a lot of cute easy-to-design options but there are tons of other user-friendly email invite sites out there as well.

Invitation-8.jpg

Step 5: Food & Drinks

Let there be cake! You can find dog bakeries everywhere that make great birthday cakes specifically for dogs. If you happen to be in the Boulder, CO area, our favorite is P.C.'s Pantry which makes these apparently delicious "Barkday Cakes" and we found out their most popular selling flavor is liver - yum.

Let_There_Be_Cake-10.jpg

On the "people food" front, we made it easy on ourselves going with pizza, beer, and cupcakes. One thing I recommend doing before planning your menu though, is to check out the ASPCA's website, they have a helpful list of foods that can be toxic or harmful to pets that you’ll want to avoid. (Ok disclaimer - so beer is on their list, but just make sure your guests are responsible and not giving beer/alcohol to dogs - hopefully this shouldn't be a tough request).

Step 6: Puppy-proofing & Decorating

If you're having the party at home, be sure to do some puppy proofing. A roving hoard of dogs can get into all sorts of trouble. Check the fence for anywhere little dogs might escape and block off areas like stairways and carpet to keep all your fuzzy friends in an easy-to-spot area. It's also a good idea to set up a little "time out" area for dogs that might be getting a little over-excited or worn out during the party.

Doggy_Time_Out_Sign-5.jpgNo_Paws_Upstairs_Sign-12.jpg

Step 7: Party Time - Sit back and let the chaos begin!
